People, Places, Things

People, Places, Things (2015) is one of the rare gems nestled in the exhaustive (and often bad) archives of Netflix. For Flight of the Conchords fans, this film will not disappoint. Jemaine Clements' character is very...well, Jemaine-esque with the usual witty remarks and deadpan delivery, but there is an emotional depth to the character that makes him likable, depressing and all around worth investing your time into.

The sweet indie-flick examines a man who lost his ideal life to infidelity and now must navigate being single at 40, teaching the art of the graphic novel, and building his relationship with his daughters. Filled with enough tension, humor and sweet father-daughter moments, People, Places, Things is a sincere film that both husbands and wives can agree on.

Love Is Hard, But We Love It

Love is not simple. Sometimes misconceptions of love as a cure-all for all the heartache and pain in the world can be romanticized, especially in film. But, the reality is love is complicated and, when we fall in love, we bring our own issues, insecurities, baggage and other crap with us. Sometimes, the transition isn't smooth.

Beginners, starring Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent, and the posthumous Oscar winner Christopher Plummer, is about love is hard. I'm not going into a synopsis. The trailer will do that for me. The film is a movie that makes you feel wonderful and rekindle the sense of love and joy when you first meet someone yet never abandons the reality that, despite love in our lives, people die. And that can complicate our emotions, relationships and all aspects of living.

The soundtrack is excellent and embraces the melancholy nostalgia of the main character dealing with the death of his father and meeting a kindred spirit, balancing his grief with the beginning of a new love.

Beginners is a beautiful, heart-felt film that simply captures joy and sadness in a way that makes you want to cry for both; a poignant, funny, lovely film worth spending 110 minutes watching.

The connection between film and writing are synonymous. In essence, film is a visual medium of what the novel already portrays. Most of my influences for style and content come from film and, as most writers, I see the scene in my head, through camera angles and movement, much like a director.
Naturally, film is a source of inspiration and below are movies, directors, scenes and other film related stuff I find of value.
